  Law Student Outreach Program

SMU Dedman School of Law (Dallas) - January 24, 2008
University of Texas at Austin - January 17, 2008

South Texas College of Law (Houston) - October 25 2007

The Law Student Outreach Program of the International Law Section of the State Bar of Texas gave a sensational presentation on international law at the South Texas College of Law. Over 30 students attended the presentation, which had eight practicing lawyers share their career advice on how one becomes an international lawyer. The presentation provided perspective from a broad range of practitioners, including two lawyers from boutique firms, an in-house attorney, three large firms lawyers and a law professor. The areas of law also were varied and covered a national security practice, immigration, litigation and energy transactional. A message that resonated throughout from the various presenters was that the students should have passion for what they do, determine what they are good at and strive to do the very best work they can to distinguish themselves from their peers. Alamdar Hamdani of Borunda, Hamdani & Simon, Steve Otillar of Baker & McKenzie, Sergio Garza of Apache Corporation, Amy Ashby of Dunbar Harder, John Nechman of South Texas College of Law, Tim Tyler of Mayer Brown and George Humphrey of Andrews Kurth made up the panel of presenters.

University of Houston (Houston) - September 18, 2007

The International Law Section of the State Bar of Texas had its first law student outreach presentation for the 2007/2008 school year on September 18, 2007 at the University of Houston. The venue was very cozy (black lounge chairs surrounded by dark wooded panels and shelves filled with a fabulous collection of law books), and about fifteen University of Houston law students attended. International lawyers Alamdar Hamdani (Borunda Hamdani), Ken Harder (Dunbar Harder), Larry Hanson (The Law Office of Lawrence W. Hanson, P.C.) and Steve Davis (Vinson & Elkins) gave insightful and engaging presentations. A few common threads throughout the presentations were that the students, in choosing their career, should be sure they are passionate about the career they choose, and to be successful in a world where businesses now compete with one another around the globe, the students should be ready to dedicate themselves to work, save their family, to build a reputation where they are the go to person and can be depended on to get the work done with quality and on deadline.
