2011 Texas Tech University School of Law: Networking is Key

"As a professor that focuses on international law and as director of our international programs, I can't begin to tell you how important this presentation has been over the past few years. You are far better sources of information regarding the actual practice of international law in Texas, and your personal reflections on how you each got into the practice and your counsel on how best to prepare for the practice are invaluable. Our students don't always realize how broad (or narrow) the practice of international law can be, and you help to provide them with some idea of how the law and theory they are learning in the classroom will apply in the real world, which makes the learning process a little more exciting.

Thanks, again, for volunteering your time to provide this important service for our students!"

Jorge A. Ramírez, Professor of Law
Director, International Programs
Texas Tech University School of Law

Law Student Outreach has two primary goals.  The first is to help law students learn about the international practice of law.  The second is to provide career guidance to law students.  We seek both to help law students understand the fast-moving trends in the world today and provide them with guideposts for their future success in our global economy, whether or not they decide on a career in international law.

To achieve these goals, we bring our members to Texas law schools so they can share their experiences and insights directly with the law students.  Our members talk about how they made the journey from law student to international lawyer.  They talk about their day-to-day practice, both the good and the bad, and provide their advice on how to be successful in an increasingly competitive world.

Our members are diverse-- men and women in large law firms, boutique practices and in-house positions.  They practice all types of international law, from billion dollar energy transactions and international litigation in the world’s most prestigious public and private forums, to handling human rights, immigration and trade matters in the U.S. and everything in between.  We bring this rich tapestry of knowledge right to the law students and help them plot their own course to success.

We also sponsor an annual law student writing contest.

Our 2010/2011 year program is in the process of being put together.  Currently, these are our scheduled events:
